England V Italy Nations League
I see that tonights game against Italy is behind closed doors !!!
Gareth Southgate says it is an "embarrassment" for England to be playing Italy behind closed doors in the Nations League on Saturday.

The Football Association was hit with a two-match ban, one suspended, following the behaviour of fans ahead of the Wembley defeat by Italy in last summer's Euro 2020 final.
There will be around 3,000 people in attendance at Molineux this weekend, largely made up of U14 schoolchildren who under UEFA rules are allowed free admission to fixtures played behind closed doors.
Would love to see Bowen get another start.

Channel 4 are showing the game.

Anyone blaming Rice for this ?

Just watching the Hungary game. Absolutely shambolic. No apparent plan going forward. They all seem lost again in this weird formation Southgate is insisting on. AND losing deservedly.

How is James a Chelsea player? Absolute shit. Phillips is struggling- how on earth is he even compared to Rice? Baffling. Bellingham looks pretty dreadful as well.

No need to get all upset, Surface. I just thought it was funny that your argument could so easily be turned on its head to show that there is actually a comparison.

I think ultimately that's what most people think, they are there for the football and won't let things like this get in the way of it, which is fair enough and quite refreshing considering how much politics has seeped into the game.

But it does feel a bit pathetic to take national pride in the achievements of individuals who have a very tenuous and sometimes suspiciously convenient relation to your own nationality.

Incidentally, I don't think anyone was talking about gender until you stuck your oar in. You wouldn't be deliberately conflating gender and sex, would you?

Excellent! We agree they are entirely different.

I'd be happier if your reasoning didn't make you look a complete cunt, but I guess I can't have everything.

Personally I don't really like it that someone like Diego Costa could play for Spain after not moving there until aged 18. Would prefer it to be limited to those who move before they're 16, but in the end it's only a fucking game anyway, so the rules are arbitrary and equal for all, and don't matter all that much unless you've got a political agenda.

"Terry Butcher was born in Singapore. Is he any less English?"

He had English parents so he plays for England through English ancestry, not because he went on to live in England. His father was in navy that's why he was born where he was.

It's a sensitive debate as everyone is scared to be seen as not inclusive these days. But there is clearly a more permissive view of what qualifies someone to be 'of England' within FIFA than there is in society at large. Reading those rules from FIFA an 18-year-old landing in Dover on one of the boats crossing the channel can be playing for the national side by 23 if we grant him asylum (which they nearly all do get granted).

I know there are plenty of open-borders anti-nationalists that love foreigners in the team to own the gammon, but I imagine there are a lot of moderate people in the middle who would baulk at someone off of one of those boats being considered for the national team in 5 years as FIFA allow.

If Nasser Hussain had declared he was INDIAN when he was 18 he would have most likely have had to get a job as Essex would have presumably been reluctant to use an overseas player spot on him.
Football is different as Premier league clubs have less restriction on FOREIGNERS

The qualification rules are fairly generous and as said players have the right to make a choice that suits them.

I see no correlation between the complicated matter of what gender you feel a true affinity with, and the entirely simple, factual matter of whether you were born in a specific country. There is no comparison at all.

So you can represent a group of people who don't regard you as one of them along you declare yourself to be one of them? Some similarities to the current trans debate.

Anyone ever tell Nasser Hussain he isn't English without getting a crack over the head with a bat? He moved here when he was seven and has no English antecedents. You are what you feel you are.

Nah the stupidity comes from asking how someone born in Canada & playing in Italy can be playing for England.
